What does "forgiveness" mean when shopping for skis?
Q. I'm actually a pretty experienced skier, but only on one pair of skis (K2 One Luv's)! I'm shopping for a second pair - something that can hopefully handle powder & park. When shopping online, websites keep referring to a ski's "forgiveness". What does that mean? Is it how flexible it is? Yes, I am looking for twin tips. Is there any down side to getting skis that have high forgiveness? Thanks!

A. "Forgiveness" refers to how a ski carves. A race ski is "unforgiving" if you don't carve with it...it will rail and go straight. A more all around ski will let you ski out of the tails and will turn regardless of how well you carve and is considered a very "forgiving" ski. If you are a good carver, then a less forgiving ski will suit you better. If you slide your tails and turn from your ankles, then you will want a more forgiving ski. HIGH forgiveness will sometimes mean less stability at high speed and less control on ice.

Q. I am Brazilian. Tell me where you are from. What is the difference among "to buy, to shop, to purchase, to go shopping and to do shopping"? Which one is more formal, which one is more colloquial, which one is more technical, professional, etc? Write me some sentences as examples, please.

A. "To buy" and "to purchase" mean the same thing. You have traded money for something and you now own it. "Purchase" is more formal. "To shop" means you are looking for something, possibly with the intention of buying but it isn't certain that you will buy. "To go shopping" or "to do THE shopping" just means that you will go out somewhere to do the act of shopping. Examples: I want to buy a new car (informal). I wish to purchase a new car (VERY formal). These two examples have the same meaning. I want to shop for a new car. This means you're going to look at cars and you may or may not find the one you like and buy it.
